Editor's Review

Developed by Akatsuki and released by Bandi Nanco Entertainment, Dragon Ball Z: DOKKAN Battle was first released in Japan and then the global market. This mobile game app can be obtained on both iOS and Android platforms. It incorporates multiple gaming genres and mechanics into one with a classic Dragon Ball Z storytelling as the general background. The gameplay waves progress-making into a board game based mechanism. As players move along the spots on the board, they would encounter with various results and effects, such as items, traps and fights etc. The outcome of those spots are usually very obvious, but fights are carried out through puzzle-solving. Players would work out match-3 styled puzzles as their attacking powers to defeat their enemies. This game can be played in many different modes and each mode also divides its contents into further sub-divisions and stages. First, players can start the game with Quest mode. In this mode, players can get through the storyline of DOKKAN by completing each individual quest. This mode is progressed through completing different areas, which further extends into multiple stages and each stage can be played in three different difficulty levels. It should be noted that the harder level you opt for, the more stamina you consume. Besides, players can also play Event mode which integrates several themes. The safest one is the story event. Players basically re-experience the stories and characters of the classic anime through a comfortable gameplay; they can also play growth event which generates a lot of rewards and useful cards for later stage of the game. Apart from them, players can also try the challenge event and Z-battle event. These two themes are more challenging with of course more awards. For very advanced pros, they may also attempt the Ultimate Clash. This playing mode is much more demanding often with a high entry level. Meanwhile, this game also offers regular world tournament every other month. This mode allows players to engage in an interactive gaming dynamic and compete with players from all around the world. In terms of the gaming progress, rewards and in-game currencies, these things are interrelated. Players can obtain rewards through successful completions of quests and events, and some of those rewards contain crucial items that in turn drive the game progress. The in-game currencies are dragon stones, Zeni currencies and green incredible gems. Those items can be earned or rewarded by gameplay, and they can also be purchased with real money at the in-game store. These resources are valuable because they are often necessary in obtaining crucial items and making game progress. Last but not least, there are dragon balls scattered around the game and can be collected as players move along. A full collection of seven dragon balls would offer players massive rewards.

This game is heavily themed with reminiscent stories and characters. It has been labeled as Editor’s Choice on Google Play. This game can be rather complicated to be sorted through for new players, but it offers various playing modes to cater to players of different levels. In general, if players who are new to the game stay on the normal difficulty level of the Quest mode or the story events, they can usually get themselves familiarize with the game mechanism and have a comfortable replaying of the epic dragon ball Z story. For higher level players, they can opt for either normal or more challenging modes for an exciting game experience. In this sense, it is a thoughtful game catering to a wide range of potential players.
